Mad Dawgs

MAD DAWGS – Berlin

When I flirst read the band name on this CD, I was not sure what to expect. The band instrumentation, acoustic piano, harp, upright bass, drums, and acoustic guitar is not the usual setup for most bands. But read the band constellation: Beginning with a rock-solid rhythm section 01 master drummer Marcel van Cleef and bass specialist Bernd Kuchenbecker, whose credits include work with the legendary Jimmy Smith. Add to the mix multi-instrumentalist Amy Zapf and bring in the much-in-demand guitarist Jan Hirte, who has a bio that includes supplying fretwork for the great Buddy Ace. Then top it off with the harp-playing, effervescent public-darling, singer Kat Baloun. What you now have is a band of renown. Amy Zapf gives piano lessons throughout this record as she demonstrates how heartfelt a solo can be in the hands of  a master. She then switches to accordion on „Jambalaya“. No words is to be lost on Jan Hirte, as he is beyond a doubt one of the best guitarists on the scene. He amply demonstrates that on this CD. When he played with me as a teenager, I knew then he was going to be one of the greats. With four different vocalists comprising various styles, this band will take you on a journey that passes through different genres of the musical spectrum. They bring a irish wind to some of the well-known evergreens. Throw in some Kat Baloun originals and you have indeed the Mad Dawgs. So after listening to this record you will be convinced how appropriate the name Mad Dawgs is. Because this is a band of musicians obviously mad about what they do.
